Lincolnshire covers almost 6,000 square kilometres with the cathedral city of Lincoln at it's heart. The county is steeped in history - Lincoln Cathedral was once the tallest building in the world. Lincoln Castle displays a copy of the Magna Carta. The county has been the home of many famous people: the first Lord Burghley, Bollingbroke, Isaac Newton. In Boston can be found the cells used to prevent the pilgrim fathers leaving for the USA.
Lincoln has a host of places to visit, the most notable of which is the Cathedral. An inspiring and majestic building, commenced in 1072, but largely rebuilt in the 12th and 13th Centuries in English Gothic style. Also situated in the uphill area of Lincoln, is Lincoln Castle that was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 on a Roman site. This defensive stronghold has long been the centre of the City's judicial and penal systems. The city boasts some fascinating museums. These include the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, which depicts domestic, social and industrial life in the County over the past two hundred years, with the emphasis on authentic room re-creations and hands on activity days. At The Lawn complex near the Castle there is the Archaeology Centre, 50 & 61 Squadrons RAF Museum, and the John Dawber Garden. Visitors can browse around the shops or simply relax in the beautiful grounds.
